SUPERCLOUD does not work in isolation and will interact with many potential partners in cloud computing and especially network virtualization. SUPERCLOUD will therefore build on a number of results and experiences from past and current EU and national projects. Please find below some of more recent ones.

BiobankCloud is an FP7 project that aims to implement a platform as a service with capacity to process genetic (NGS) data at the speed it is generated. It also proposes an infrastructure for archival and sharing of sensitive bioinformatics data among federations of biobanks.

The PRACTICE project aims to build a secure cloud framework that allows for the realization of advanced and practical cryptographic technologies providing sophisticated security and privacy guarantees for all parties in cloudcomputing scenarios. The mission of PRACTICE is to design cloud computing technologies that allow computations in the cloud thus enabling new business processes while keeping the used data secret. Unlike today – where insiders can access sensitive data – PRACTICE will prevent cloud providers and other unauthorized parties from obtaining secret or sensitive information.

The overall problem that SUNFISH has looked into is the lack of infrastructure and technology allowing Public Sector players to federate their clouds. Cloud computing is drawing wide attention in the Public Sector. Nowadays main bodies rely on their own private clouds, leading to a multitude of secluded, not-interoperable cloud centres. The lack of reliable cross-cloud infrastructure hinders effective and practicable exploitation of clouds in the Public sector. SUNFISH has built upon this need by providing a software platform that via the principled usage of a blockchain infrastructure offers decentralised, democratic and secure federation of private clouds. Indeed, SUNFISH outputs seek to satisfy the functional requirements and the organisational needs of all the actors involved in the real-world application of the cases. However, the SUNFISH project potentially has an even wider target market than the public sector bodies. In fact, the SUNFISH platform is being developed to be usable by both Public Sector Institutions, as well as private sector players. SUNFISH’s unique selling point consists in the new approach it has defined, called “Federation as a Service (FaaS)”, a solution designed for the public sector, able to assure dynamic and secure management of cloud federations. This service is realised via the “SUNFISH Platform”, whose forming components represent essential parts of the overall functioning. Key functionalities:
- Dynamic cloud management - a dynamic federation of clouds and their related services, with optimal service level and workload;
- Democratic governance - an innovative cloud federation governance supporting trustless coalitions, as none of the federated organisations rules on the others, thanks to the service ledger empowering the governance;
- Data security - advanced, innovative privacy-preserving services enforcing access control and monitoring to protect provisioning of federated services and sharing of data.
The SUNFISH project has developed three concrete deployment examples, through three different use cases. These use cases are based on data and infrastructures made available by 3 public sector Consortium partners:
- The Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF)
- The Maltese Ministry for Finance (MFIN)
- The South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU)
The SUNFISH project is also contributing to improve citizen’s trust in cloud-based services and is helping to ease legislative issues on data sharing.
